Will C. Wood Track & Field Athletes Make History with Record-Breaking Performances!

Record-Breaking Weekend for Will C. Wood Track & Field at the Crump Invitational

The Will C. Wood High School Track & Field team made an unforgettable mark at the Crump Invitational in Dixon this past Saturday, with two Wildcats rewriting the school record books and several others delivering standout performances.

Seymour and Ford Smash School Records

DeShawn Seymour Jr. delivered a blazing performance in the 100-meter dash, finishing first with an incredible time of 10.71 seconds. His finish edged out the previous record of 10.72 set by Tayvian Cunningham in 2016, cementing his place in Wildcat history.

Ruby Ford showcased her endurance and speed in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 59.34 seconds to place third and surpass the long-standing record of 59.98 set by Carina Bell in 1996.

More Podium Finishes for the Wildcats

Mardell Taylor Jr. had a dominant day for the boys’ team, racking up multiple top-three finishes:

  • First place in the 300-meter hurdles (42.72)
  • Second place in the 110-meter hurdles (15.99)
  • Third place in the triple jump (38-5.5)

Kosygin Rodriguez-Outlaw led the frosh/soph boys team to a fifth-place finish with an unstoppable performance, taking home three first-place finishes:

  • First place in the 110-meter hurdles (16.12) – setting a new school frosh/soph record!
  • First place in the 300-meter hurdles (45.09)
  • First place in the pole vault (9-0)

Team Results & Final Standings

  • The Will C. Wood boys team tied Vintage for fourth place with 52 points
  • The Will C. Wood girls team finished 13th with 15 points
  • The frosh/soph boys team placed fifth with 55 points

Wildcats Dominate Vanden in Track & Field Sweep!

The Will C. Wood track and field teams delivered an outstanding performance on Wednesday, sweeping Vanden in dominant fashion. The Wildcat boys cruised to a 103-38 victory, while the girls secured a strong 86-39 win—a true showcase of speed, strength, and teamwork!

On the boys’ side, Deshaun Seymour Jr. was unstoppable, winning three events—the 100-meter dash (10.84 seconds), 200-meter dash (23.67), and the 4×100 relay with teammates Julian Hernandez, Timmothy Pinkney, and Azaireon Taylor (43.97). Mardell Taylor Jr. also put on a show, dominating the 110-meter hurdles (16.23), 300-meter hurdles (43.17), and the triple jump (39-04.00). Additional wins came from Alex Pelayo in the 1600 (4:47.11), Jackson Scott in the long jump (19-00.5), and Kallen Richey in the high jump (5-04).

The Wildcat girls put on a stellar performance as well, led by Michelle Hughes, who took first in the 400-meter (1:01.12), and Tiekeya Robinson, who claimed the 200-meter (29.33). Hughes and Robinson also teamed up with Ruby Ford and Maurce Brewer to dominate the 4×100 relay (51.63). Lea Pendergraft was another standout, securing victories in the high jump (4-00) and pole vault (6-10).

This was a huge win for the Wildcats, proving once again that hard work and dedication pay off. Congratulations to all the athletes who competed—your school is proud of you! Keep that momentum going, and let’s bring home even more victories this season. Go Wildcats!

Wood Boys Win Rivalry Swimming Meet

The Will C. Wood High Boys swimming team met for a rivalry meet on Wednesday and pulled out a victory.

The Wood boys won 93-90.

The Wildcats were led by the first-place finishes of Kylan Smith (200 and 500 Free), Jag Dewitt (100 Free), Noah Cano (50 Free, 100 Back), and Hayden Fickes (100 Fly). Smith, Dewitt, Cano and Fickes teamed up to win both the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Free relay.

Coach Jacob Wright Field Day

In a heartfelt tribute to the late Coach Jacob Wright, Will C. Wood High School is set to host the inaugural “Coach Jacob Wright Field Day” on March 15, 2025. This event aims to honor Coach Wright’s enduring legacy and his profound impact on the school’s athletic community.

The field day will feature a variety of athletic activities, reflecting Coach Wright’s passion for sports and his commitment to fostering teamwork and sportsmanship among students. Participants can look forward to friendly competitions, skill showcases, and opportunities to engage in the sports that Coach Wright championed during his tenure at Will C. Wood.

Organizers encourage alumni, current students, faculty, and community members to come together in celebration of Coach Wright’s life and contributions. The event not only serves as a memorial but also as a testament to the lasting influence a dedicated coach can have on their community.

Proceeds from the event will support the school’s athletic programs, ensuring that Coach Wright’s commitment to nurturing young athletes continues to inspire future generations. Wood Wrestler Makes History

A wrestler from Will C. Wood High School has secured her spot in the upcoming CIF State Wrestling Championships. The Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament, held at Stockton Arena, served as the battleground where athletes showcased their dedication and skill.

Will C. Wood High School Standout:

  • State Qualifier: Senior 132-pounder, Sarah Thompson, made history by becoming the first female wrestler from Will C. Wood to qualify for the state tournament, showcasing her exceptional talent and breaking barriers in the sport.

The CIF State Wrestling Championships are scheduled to take place at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.

Wood Soccer Players Earn MEL All-League Honors

In an impressive display of talent, several athletes from Will C. Wood High School have been recognized with Monticello Empire League (MEL) all-league honors for their outstanding performances in soccer.

Boys Soccer:

  • First Team All-League: Senior forward Daniel Smith led the Wildcats’ offense with exceptional skill and determination, earning him a well-deserved spot on the first team.
  • Second Team All-League: Junior midfielder Alex Johnson showcased versatility and playmaking abilities throughout the season, securing his position on the second team.
  • Honorable Mention: Sophomore defender Michael Lee received honorable mention for his steadfast contributions to the team’s defense.

Girls Soccer:

  • First Team All-League: Senior midfielder Emily Davis demonstrated leadership and technical prowess, making her an invaluable asset to the Wildcats and earning first-team honors.
  • Second Team All-League: Junior defender Sarah Martinez consistently anchored the defense, leading to her recognition on the second team.
  • Honorable Mention: Freshman forward Jessica Nguyen made a significant impact in her debut season, earning honorable mention for her offensive contributions.

Will C. Wood Wins At Disneyland!!!!

Congratulations to students in the WCW Sylvan Singers and Tintinnabulists Hand Bell Choir for earning ‘superiors’ at the choral competition last weekend as well as to Michael Angelis for winning ‘best overall soloist’ and kudos to the group for earning ‘Best Overall Choral Program.’ Five states were represented by nearly two dozen ensembles.
